It has been 30 anniversary since the first Toy Story film debuted, launching Pixar as a leading animation studio and introducing viewers to iconic characters like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (the voice talent), who are now famous worldwide.
Coming in 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 landed this week, providing a brief look into the storyline but leaving viewers curious how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.
In the teaser shows the young girl â who received Andy's toys when he left for college â receiving a latest toy, one that alarms Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She gets her first tablet computer, and she is excited about it.
Theoretically, the frog-shaped tablet will animate just like Bonnie's other toys. However, the toys appear to consider it as a danger intending to supplant them, which it likely will.
One thing the teaser doesn't touch on is why Woody is returned with his friends in Bonnie's room. The end of Toy Story 4 saw him set off on a fresh journey with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), traveling with a fair and assisting prize toys find good homes.
Certainly, Pixar will explain the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him show up in the familiar setting unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, though. It also raises questions whether his partner will have returned with Woody. And what about the stuntman toy (Keanu Reeves)?
At the very least, some aspects are carrying over from the earlier movie. The final act Woody did before setting off for his fresh path was hand over his symbol of authority to Jessie (Joan Cusack), leaving her in charge of the toy domain. The clip shows the badge pinned to her outfit.
Hopefully she is still the driving force among the group.
Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on the scheduled date.
