Whenever a significant honors show nears, one notices an outcry for the addition additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of followers with niche passions.
A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category in 2014
- Another creative title missed out in 2019
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
