No fewer than thirteen passengers perish and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” stated the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term finished the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were built at an rapid rate, beating predictions to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled persistent concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party demanded an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was requested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
