Are You Able to Solve It? The Overlooked Netherlands Creation Which Forged our Modern World

One can find numerous contenders for the designation as “planet’s most significant innovation.” The wheel. The movable type. The combustion motor.

According to a new book, however, that honor belongs to the mechanised sawmill invented through Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.

“Prior to mechanised cutting, building a simple trading ship necessitated approximately 10 lumberjacks working over three months,” notes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-driven sawmills, the same quantity of processed timber could be produced within a week.”

Thanks to their rapid automated cutter, which converted timber into boards using almost no manual labor, Dutch builders could construct vessels more quickly compared to any other nation, which unleashed one hundred years of Netherlands naval, financial and cultural dominance in Europe and the world.

The First True Manufacturing Machine

Corneliszoon’s sawmill, contends the writer, was “humanity’s initial true factory machine.” A wind turbine rotated a wheel. One component converted its circular motion into vertical motion for the saw. Another component transformed that same spinning motion into a sideway’s motion feeding the timber toward the cutter. A geared mechanism moved the log ahead a measured step each cycle.

“Each element was modest by itself. The Dutchman’s brilliance lay in how to integrate them so the machine operated in a precisely synchronized sequence, sawing on every descending motion and advancing with each upward stroke. It was an astonishingly intelligent application of basic parts.”

Which brings us to today’s puzzle. The task is you to reinvent one of the fundamental concepts underpinning this historic machine.

Circular to Vertical

Construct a mechanism which converts circular motion into up-and-down motion. You have these components only: A spinning wheel. Two pegs. Two rods. A “guide”, that is a tube or sleeve into which a single the rods can slide snugly. (Consider that you can put things on a stand, so the parts don’t collapse.)
